Explain? Art is to be appreciated not explained.

To me it seems like the inside of the mind during a mental breakdown. What is your opinion; what do you think is happening?

You just have to come to the realization that art is expression; you either "appreciate" it or you don't. It's such a clever concept; there is no right or wrong. There are the mainstream classics from throughout history, and then there's the crucifix in a bottle of urine. Jackson Pollock "paints" like a flock of birds took a shit in Technicolor and it's incredible. Don't feel like you're "L7" if you don't get it. Two people don't even see the same thing.

The lamp shade changing from a physical object to a 2D representation on the wall, behind the lamp itself, to merely a shadow of the lamp shade as things get more and more hectic, returning to the physical manifestation as the mood calms is an exquisite detail that definitely adds to the scene. I suspect there are many more details I'm missing that help make this a beautiful, but disturbing short.

... and no, I don't feel like I "get it" at all. I certainly do enjoy it, however.

I agree with twiddles' interpretation. The animation seems to depict the mental breakdown of a person over a period of time. The blackouts seem to mark the end of an episode with each episode getting progressively worse. During an episode the person seems to be trying to self soothe by creating a stronger persona (tidy monster) who claims to be able to fix the mess created by his fractured mind.

Some of this work seems to be inspired by the oscar-winning animation 'Ryan' which dealt with a similar subject matter:

Ryan became famous for the use of multi-perspective, non-linear projection to create a visceral reaction in the viewer. The animators of Tidy Monster might also be using a similar technique.
Techniques used in Ryan:
